Ha Noi, the history goes back almost a thousand years, when the city was founded by Emperor Ly Thai To, who in 1010 was renamed Thang Long area – 'rising Dragon'. Shortly after some of the oldest structures in the city were built as the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's oldest university.
Ha Noi is a city rich in tradition and legend. Probably the most famous legend of all is the story of King Arthur from Hoan Kiem Lake. Legend has it that in the 15th century Emperor Le Thai To defeat the Chinese invaders with the help of a magic sword. While rowing on the lake an enormous turtle seized the sword from his hands. The Emperor took this to mean that peace has been restored and the sword had been returned to its guardian spirit. In honor of the event, renamed the lake Ho 'Hoan Kiem – Lake of the Restored Sword.
Although nearly a thousand years, Ha Noi, had to wait until 1831 to regain its former name, when Emperor Minh Mang established it as the capital of Northern Province. In fact, the last dynasty of Vietnam, the Nguyen dynasty, moved his capital from Hanoi to Hue. The name of Ha Noi means "where the curves of rivers, the river is the Song Hong or Red River.

Ngoc Son Temple strong>
Located on a small island in the Hoan Kiem Lake, its history dates back to the 13th century. Casco Viejo
Also known as the 36 Streets, the shopping area of narrow streets is home to thousands of small businesses and merchants. Originally, each of 36 streets names' was related to the products sold there. Therefore you can walk from Fish Street to Tin Street to Bamboo Street. It is a great place to explore on foot with numerous photo opportunities.
Ho Chi Minh strong> Completed in 1975, the complex containing the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh , his former stilt house residence, the Presidential Palace and Ho Chi Minh Museum. When visiting the mausoleum of the following rules must be observed: No short sleeves and skirts are permitted. The silence must be observed to enter the tomb and of course without pictures (in fact, all bags must be left out). It's quite an experience as the queue with many Vietnamese, some of whom have traveled many miles to make the pilgrimage.
Temple of Literature
strong> Originally built as a temple to Confucius, this is the site of the first university of Vietnam dating back to 1070. Inside are the stone stele mounted on the backs of turtles, with the names of the graduates of the university. The complex is divided into five courtyards with different paths that were initially reserved for the emperor and his mandarins. One of the courtyards contains the statue of Confucius guarded by two beautiful bronze storks standing on turtles. The temple highlights the importance that Vietnamese society placed then and now in education.
Hoa Lo Prison
strong> Better known by its former inmates as "The Hanoi Hilton ' became famous during the U.S. War America, like many POWs were imprisoned here. Prisoners were notable Republican Sen. John McCain and Douglas Peterson, who later became the first postwar U.S. ambassador in Vietnam.
Museum of Ethnology
strong> must for anyone wanting to visit either or Chao Mai Sapa in particular. This museum is widely recognized as the best in the country and has an extensive exhibition devoted to 54 of Vietnam's ethnic minority peoples. And the full range of exhibits inside, there are also traditional tribal houses reconstructed on the site.
Water Puppet Theater
strong> This is a unique creation with its origins Vietnamese date back almost a thousand years. Originally these works have been carried out on lakes and ponds during the monsoon season, which represent the daily life and many stories and legends. The stories are still the same, but production now takes place in a specially designed theater stage with a knee deep in water. The puppeteers are hidden behind a bamboo screen and the whole experience is both entertaining and fun
Quan Thanh Temple strong>

There are many interesting temples in the city, but one of the best is the Quan Thanh in the West Lake. It is dedicated to a legendary Gen. Than Vu. At the center is the bronze statue of four meters dedicated to the man who later became the patron saint of the city. It is believed that if you rub the right foot of the statue that will bring good luck.
