Some fictional hotels, given their fictional nature, can take on different forms as they move across different adaptations. Take the Overlook Hotel, for example. It is the fictional hotel in the Stephen King novel The Shining. King’s inspiration for the said hotel was The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. The same hotel was used for the TV adaptation made by ABC. Meanwhile, in the film adaptation of the novel, directed by Stanley Kubrick, the mountain resort Timberline Lodge took the form of the fictional Overlook Hotel.

John Irving’s novel, The New Hampshire Hotel, features the titular hotel as a central player in the plot. The protagonist family transformed an old and abandoned school into the hotel of the title, naming it The New Hampshire Hotel. Later in the story, the remaining members of the family move to Vienna, to a second New Hampshire Hotel.

The 1966 novel The Comedians, written by Graham Greene, takes place mainly in the fictional Hotel Trianon. The author based the Trianon on 19th century Gothic structure Hotel Oloffson, found in Port-au-Prince in Haiti, where he stayed frequently during the 1950s.

However, it isn’t only in the good old **** tube where fictional hotels can be found. Take stage plays, for example.
