Tay Ninh is about 90 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh.  We had a lunch of French bread, meat viands and rice noodles, which most of our male companions did not appreciate very much, having been accustomed to rice meals.

We were back at Ho Chi Minh at around 4 in the afternoon, and again, we took advantage of our free time to go to Ben Thanh market to spend our remaining Dong, which was not a legal tender outside the country.  We had to spend our remaining currencies now since it was the last shopping we could do because we anticipated an early flight going back to the Philippines the next day.  Amidst rushing motorcycles which are the king of the road in Vietnam, we crossed unfamiliar streets to search for Ben Thanh, which was quite an easy feat, having our hotel inside the city.  It was an enjoyable experience shopping there especially with the cheerful Vietnamese sales ladies who even knew how to speak my language.

Comparing Hanoi with Ho Chi Minh, I would say that the first was more orderly and organized, but stiff and somehow instigates apprehension and anxiety.  I am not very familiar with a communist form of government, and not being exposed to such set-up makes me uncomfortable as to how or what manner of conduct is expected from its citizens, or tourists – like me – for that matter.  Although I liked the Hanoi climate better, the Ho Chi Minh set-up of the city was very similar to the Philippine ambiance, just as warm and chaotic, so to speak, which made me more at home in the latter location.  Furthermore, knowing that Ho Chi Minh is a Republic and not communist in some way also influenced this personal preference.

All together, it was a pleasant experience getting acquainted with Vietnam, its culture and people.  Being exposed to a different society, mores and traditions widens one’s horizons, and the way that one looks at the world as a whole.  I was able to realize that Vietnam, or any country for that matter, has its own inherent beauty, but that it is, indeed, in the eye of the beholder.  Given the chance, I would certainly welcome another opportunity to travel to another location or country to further discover the abundant splendor of nature in the world.

Vietnam has population over 85 million with 259/km2 density. Northern part of country consists mostly highlands and the Red River Delta. Phan Xi Păng, is the highest mountain in Vietnam.

Because of differences in latitude and the marked variety of topographical relief, the climate tends to vary considerably from place to place. During the winter or dry season, extending roughly from November to April, the monsoon winds usually blow from the northeast along the China coast and across the Gulf of Tonkin, picking up considerable moisture; consequently the winter season in most parts of the country is dry only by comparison with the rainy or summer season.

Vietnam has 3000 Km starched coast with hundreds of beaches there. Among them some beaches are famous worldwide.

Bai Chay Beach: Crowded in Summer and weekend, Bai Chay is near to Hanoi. You will get delicious seafood offered by Halong Bay. Halong Bay offers plenty of small beaches, most of them on islands in the middle of the Bay.

My Khe Beach: This is called China beach for foreigners, looks out at Monkey Mountain east of Danang Bay. The beach is crowded with local football player, morning exercise. It is famous beaches for Vietnamese.

Doc Let: Starched 40 km north of Niha Trang, you will get long deserted beaches and solitudes. The place is famous for swim and boiled carbs.

Vung Tau: This is located near to Saigon, is cheapest and closest destinations for Saigonese escaping from crowded city. But Sundays beach is packed so less solitudes than others.

Phu Quoc: It is whitest sand beach in country, with best sunset sight. It is located at Gulf of Thailand and totally different than other beaches. Just an hour flight from Saigon and you’ll be enjoying the sun, sea and seafood of Vietnam’s most southern beach.

The Hue Traditional Crafts Festival, to be celebrated from April 29 to May 3, will be the key event for tourists this year and will build on the achievements of previous festivals. It will specialise in the arts of bonsai and gastronomy with the theme of Vietnamese gastronomy in the tranquillity of Hue’s gardens.

Festival goers will be immersed in the conspicuous cultural ambience through Vietnam’s divine culinary and bonsai arts. Cuisines from distinct geographical regions across the country will be featured: the culinary specialities of the south, the delicate cuisine of Hue with its royal meals, vegetarian food and popular dishes to be served in the city’s splendid gardens, and the authentic tastes from the north.

Visitors will also have chance to meet prominent culinary researchers and experts, talented bonsai artists, antiques collectors and other artists in the country in the variety of fascinating artistic programmes and community activities.

For the national year of tourism in 2012, hosted by Thua Thien-Hue Province, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will launch many tourism programmes.

For example, the department will organise tours to discover the treasures of Hue and help tourists understand the legacy of the Nguyen dynasty by experiencing the culture and visiting pagodas.

Let’s Experience Hue will introduce tourists to Hue festivals, crafts villages and royal life. Tours take visitors on various routes through the provinces and allow them to discover the heritage of the city. For those who want to relax, there will be walking tours that take visitors to forests, to rest by Lang Co Beach and to discover ancient houses.

“Thua Thien-Hue is an attractive destination for tourists as tourism is the key industry of the province,” said Phan Tien Dung, director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

“In 2010, Hue received 1.5 million visitors, 700,000 of which were foreigners.”

At the conference, a co-operation memorandum was signed between Hanoi’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Department and its counterparts from Thua Thien-Hue Province and HCM City.

A similar conference for the same purpose will take place in HCM City on January 19.

China and the Vietnam Peace Talks, 1965-1968

The Vietnam War was not just a war between Vietnam and the United States; it also drew in several other countries that were allied with each side. These allies all had their own goals, agendas and fears and contributed to the war.

A peaceful settlement to the Vietnam War was a goal for many countries and for some it was something not entirely desired. China, for example, tried to sabotage peace process and encouraged North Vietnam to follow her example. The reason for this was relations with the Soviet Union, including an obsessive fear about the declension of international communism as observed in the Soviet example. However, things did not go quite as she wanted.

During the mid 1960s Beijing was asked to participate in a number of peace talks between Washington and Hanoi. However, Beijing strongly opposed these peace talks. When the Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin proposed an international conference on Indochina to the DRV and China in 1965. Beijing was not pleased with the Soviet’s move, believing that Moscow wanted to make an arrangement with Washington regarding Vietnam.

On the first and second of April 1965, the British government requested to send an envoy to Beijing to discuss the Vietnam issue; however, Beijing asserted that this was “inappropriate and unwelcome”. For the Chinese, “the British government, the Chinese continued, had not condemned U.S. aggression in Vietnam and thus had betrayed its obligations as a co-chair of the 1954 Geneva Conference”.

“On June 22 Xiong Xianghui, Chinese Charge d’Affaires to Britain, met in London with President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, who was selected for the Commonwealth mission be-cause of his good relationships with both Hanoi and Beijing. In accordance with Beijing’s general policy of opposing peace talks, Xiong told Nkrumah that the British Commonwealth peace mission would only be “beneficial to U.S. imperialism” and that China would not welcome it. Two days later the Chinese Foreign Ministry approved Xiong’s position. In a message to the British government on June 25, Beijing officially rejected the Commonwealth mission, claiming that the U.S. violation of the Geneva Accords lay at the root of the Vietnam problem”.

On the 19th July, French Minister of State Andre Malraux arrived in Beijing as a special envoy of President Charles de Gaulle. Discussing the Vietnam issue with Beijing, he proposed a ‘neutralization of Indochina’. According to this plan, Vietnam’s borders would be divided along the Truong Son Ra Mountains. West of here, plus Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand would be neutral. China did not agree.

China kept on demanding Moscow to ‘turn up the heat’ on Europe to support the Vietnamese struggle. In March 1966, Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping, Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee, insisted that the Soviet Union “resort to brinkmanship” and produce “greater tension in the west” to oppose Washington’s development of the Vietnam War.

China’s reasons for opposing the Vietnamese peace talks can be explained as such: Chairman Mao believed that the war in Vietnam could be seen as a model war of national liberation that could prove the appropriateness of Beijing’s militant approach. Another reason was that Mao wanted limit the power of the Soviet Union in Southeast Asia as he thought that if Moscow and the US could achieve a settlement together then they might collaborate on other problematic issues in Asia, diminishing China’s influence.

Finally, Mao saw the persistent conflict in Indochina constructive to restore ideological dedication within China and to assemble domestic support for the Great Cultural Revolution.

Common impressions for tourist to easily recognize are the friendly, enthusiastic and hospitable people of Hanoi. Living in California, US, Dr Gish chooses Hanoi capital as the tourism destination for his family. He said that his family had visited many famous landscapes, enjoyed traditional delicious dishes in Hanoi and contacted many people. However, the most memorable impression for his family was the vibrant vitality of Hanoi’s traditional culture.

“Hanoi leaves good impressions for me because the city has preserved its cultural heritages, for example, Tortoise Tower in Sword Lake, daily life and business activities of inhabitants in the Old Quarter. I think that Hanoi is trying to preserve its essential cultural values of previous years and be determined to develop a modern city at the same time,” Dr Gish said.

Sharing these thoughts with Dr Gish, Mr.

George Saxton also loves to visit historical sites in Hanoi. For him, these are memorable places during his visit.  “I’m sure to remember Sword Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, the Temple of Literature, the house on stilts where Uncle Ho lived and the whole area. I like the way the house on stilts is preserved, that is what I remember about Hanoi.”

The Temple of Literature, Hanoi, Vietnam

For Ms Marcia of Maryland, US, dishes like pho (noodle soup), cha ca (fried fish), rice vermicelli and meat rolls or coffee in Hanoi are all wonderful but her most memorable impression about Hanoi is completely different.

It is the people and cultural character of Hanoi. Hanoi’s culture is charming and plentiful. One of the most beautiful images among Asian countries she has ever seen is the image of Vietnamese women in long-dresses and “any time I close my eyes I see that image”. “I also like the image of farmers growing rice in the fields,” she happily said. That is what she remembers about Hanoi.

That is also the comments of Ms Johnson from Idaho, US. She said that it is hard to use any word to fully describe the people in Hanoi. Therefore, she has to come back Hanoi many times. “Hanoi people are very wonderful and enthusiastic and eager to help strangers. The first time we came to Hanoi was in 1995 we were a little worried of not being welcomed, but unexpectedly every one treated us very kindly. We were helped any time we needed assistance. We had close friends and they treated us very well when we were there. We can not talk all about the wonderful people in Viet Nam,” Ms Johnson said.

Living in Hanoi for many years, James Rhodes and his wife from Alabama, US, were eager to return Hanoi in the autumn to welcome the capital’s 1,000th birthday. Hanoi attracts him and his wife with special things.

“The thing we like most in Hanoi is the Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra. This is a wonderful orchestra. I must say that we have listened to symphonies all over the world but the Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra is excellent. Additionally, in Hanoi, the folk music is also good. This year, we come back to celebrate the 1,000 years of Thang Long – Hanoi and we don’t intend to leave this city. We choose to live in Hanoi because this is a cheap city and people there are friendly. My wife and I decided to choose Hanoi as our home.

Mr. Steve Ball living in Maine, US said that for him, Hanoi is an ancient city. Hanoi truthfully reflects the culture of Viet Nam, this is a beautiful city for tourists to visit, go for a walk and are welcomed. Mr. Steve always encourages his friends to come to Hanoi.

“I want to send sincere congratulations to all people of Hanoi capital on the occasion of the Hanoi’s 1,000th birthday. I desire that Hanoi continues to develop prosperously. I myself also expect to arrive in Hanoi to share this happiness with the people in the capital about this event. I wish the best things for Hanoi people. Good bye and see you in Viet Nam,” he said on the occasion of Hanoi’s 1,000th birthday.
